Hate the Rude Drivers & Pedestrians in Nairobi E-mail
From Nairobi, Kenya
Sunday, November 30, 2008

For the most part lovin' Kenya... but got two big complaints:

DRIVER RUDNESS
Kenyans are great runners... look who's winning the marathons. Now know why... the other national sport... driving into pedestrians. That's why they're medal-winning runners... casually walk across the street & put your life in jeopardy. Saw a news special on it, there's been thousands crippled by this bizarre sport.

And it's not just moving vehicles... walk in between parked vehicles & if one decides to move, well, he gets bonus points for crushing you.

(This has been a real shock to my system... everywhere except Cambodia with the wildest traffic of all... I'd just flip my hair & semi-trucks would come to a screeching halt. Trying to cross the crazy Cairo traffic, I'd often tell my friends "back up, let 'the hair' do the work".)

Kenya SignThink this Nairobi street sign pretty much sums it up:
"No Stopping For Pedestrians"

PEDISTRIAN RUDENESS
As if the drivers weren't enough, pedestrians are jerks too. Coming at you or from behind... crowded or completely empty sidewalk... they still manage to walk right into you! And if they've got bags they can accidently hit you with, bonus points for them. Gotta ton of bruises!

Couldn't figure this out... was it flirting... repressed aggression against white colonialists... or just the law of the urban jungle... so did my own study. Over 30 minutes recorded 25 incidents & found:
96% of the perpetrators were men under the age of 30
while victim sex & age equally spreed across the board
(Yeah, was kinda bored...)
